Several European airlines have recently announced new flight services to the Central American country which are significantly improving international access.
Edelweiss Air Flights from Switzerland to Costa Rica
Zurich-based Swiss airline Edelweiss Air, which is a subsidiary of Lufthansa, began operating direct flights from Switzerland to Costa Rica on 9th May 9 2017.
Edelweiss’s plans to launch flights to Costa Rica, which were announced last year by President Luis Guillermo Solis and Minister of Tourism Mauricio Ventura, will enable 27,000 passengers to travel from Europe.
With the launch of this new flight service, Switzerland became the sixth European country to operate direct flights to Costa Rica.
KLM Flights from Amsterdam to Costa Rica
The new KLM flight service is scheduled to commence on 31st October 2017.
Iberia Flights from Rome to Costa Rica
Iberia has also announced plans to launch 2 direct flights between Italy and Costa Rica.
The Milan-Madrid and Roma-Madrid routes will require just a short layover in Madrid (Spain) before passengers travel onward to San Jose.
The flights will remove the need to stop in London, Paris or Frankfurt to take a connecting flight.
Details and pricing have not yet been released.
According to the new Costa Rica Tourism Board (ICT), the Central American country welcomed 24,173 Italian visitors in 2016 – up 7.7% compared to 2015 – which represents great potential for Costa Rica.
According to Neil Chernoff, Director of Networks and Alliances of Iberia: “For Iberia, Costa Rica is an important market and we have contributed with the development of the country as a tourism destination in Europe since 2004 when the direct flights begun. The cooperation with ICT has been very productive, and now we are going to focus on the Italian market which has a lot of potential.”
Increase in Domestic Flights
According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC), there has also been an increase in domestic flights within Costa Rica.
Last year (2016) the number of passengers who flew from one destination to another within Costa Rica surpassed 265,500.
This represents an increase of 27% compared to the previous year (2015).
One airline – Nature Air, which currently flies to destinations such as Liberia, Tamarindo and Bocas del Toro and has plans to launch routes to Corn Island in Nicaragua, David in Panama and Puero Viejo in Limon – reported an increase of 68%.
Domestic flights significantly cut journey time, for example, traveling from San Jose to Liberia in Guanacaste can take up to 4 hours by car, compared to just 30 minutes by plane from Juan Santamaría airport to Daniel Oduber Liberia (LIR) airport.
